What is Acetylene?
Acetylene is an essential component for chemical synthesis. As the simplest alkyne, with the formula C2H2, it is used in a wide range of synthetic processes, including the manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride and other essential chemicals, and a wide range of specialty products: vitamins, fragrances, flavors, and many others. For these uses, acetylene purity is essential so that the chemicals being produced are made flawlessly, without harmful impurities. While acetylene is familiar as fuel for welding and metal cutting, approximately three-quarters of the world's supply of acetylene is used for chemical manufacturing, where purity is essential.
Conventional Acetylene Production – Inefficient and Dirty
Generating acetylene requires energy-intensive processes that consume considerable fuel. Acetylene production also depends on large scale plants for favorable economics. Furthermore, the acetylene output from these processes contains multiple impurities and chemical byproducts, all of which must be removed to create an acetylene stream that is suitable for chemical manufacturing. In addition, acetylene is costly and complex to distribute, requiring compression in heavy bottles or tanks and specialized transportation.
